Clan MacBean:
Donaldbain, Duncan, Malcolm, Macbeth
The Gaelic 'Ban' or Bain means ‘fair’ and with Scottish
blood made up with so much Norse and Germanic stock this descriptive term
could
have been applied to many people. Indeed the name is found associated
with
several clans in many districts. There was an early Scottish King
called
Donald Ban, who was the son of Duncan and Malcolm's brother.
Clan MacDuff:
MacDuff, Lady MacDuff, Gruach
Clan
Duff originated from the Royal Scoto-Pictish line, of which Queen
Gruach stood as its senior representative. Her son, Lulach, succeeded the
throne but
was murdered in 1058, whereby Malcolm Canmore won the throne.
Stewart: Banquo,
Fleance, Lennox, Menteith
The Stewart family records its traditional descent from Banquo, Thane of
Lochaber. Historically, however, the family appears to be descended
from an
ancient family who were seneschals of Dol in Brittany. They acquired
lands in England after the Norman conquest and moved to Scotland
when David I ascended to the throne of Scotland. This line eventually
sits on both the
thrones of England and Scotland in the person of King James I and VI.
Ross: Ross
The
name Ross derives from the ancient Celtic word “Ros”, meaning “a
promontory”, in this case the lands of Easter Ross.
Mac Innes:
Angus
MacInnes
is a Celtic name derived from Mac Aonghais - Gaelic for the
son of Angus.
